The first week is about to finish

I have been allotted to teach three classes of First year and one class of Second year. So far the experience is okay. I hope all of those interacting with me can become independent in their lives.

I teach English, so they have a desire to learn it but they are not interested in putting in the effort. The Engineering class seems dedicated enough.

The date for NOP-LUMS has passed. NOP stands for National Outreach Program, basically you get free education in LUMS.

Other interesting things include:
There might be a trip going to Neelum Valley though I proposed something else.

This is what I proposed, the whole message.

"Dear Sir,

Wikipedia's photography competition require entries for heritage sites in Pakistan. Here's the page
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_Pakistan ($2500 prize money).

Can we combine our trip for boys or even girls, a one day trip to some famous heritage site in Punjab or even Lahore, and ask students to take pictures and submit it here.

Wikipedia is offering $2500 travel expenses. And prizes at national and international level. Last date is the last of September. It's a yearly competition.

Another suggestion for trip is to book, the Lahore double decker bus. And make every student enjoy his/her own Lahore.

Regards,
English Teacher
Ali ..."

I don't think my idea would be approved. But still, what can I do. I had to contribute in what I truly believe can be beneficial.

There are many students in the class that are interested in a lot of things. M is interested in creating his own setup related to dairy, and others are interested in going in web development or joining some famous company. While others are interested in joining the top most schools.

I have asked the students to not create any noise in the class. If they are disturbed because of whatever reason, they can excuse themselves and put their heads down, or talk silently while sit in the corner. I do not want to disturb who is mentally not willing to put effort into being in the class. And I cannot go into each and every reason, because the strength of every class is around 30-40.

I teach 4-5 lectures daily, and it is very tiring to speak continously. So, this strategy might work. It did work.

Plus, my strategy is to teach 3 days and revise (without explicitly saying) whatever I have taught for the next three days. In the revision session, students get to watch relevant course related videos, plus videos that might be useful to improve their English and help them keep themselves motivated.

It's 7.09 am, and college starts at 8.20 am, and I have to reach it before 8.15 am. So, have a nice day, keep your energies up, don't take life serious, work hard and smart. Have faith in your abilities.

Stay away from drugs!

Entry tests and students

Students are having a tough time preparing for entry tests. There are a lot of options for students. Entry test itself will be challenging. One of the students, Usama, came today and he was concerned about the preparation of his exams. He has joined an academy, but still English section seems to be tough. My recommendation for him was that he should learn high frequency word list of SAT. Here's the quizlet page for learning SAT high frequency word list.

Here's the entry tests dates you should know about:

Changing just the color

What about changing the color to brown, or yellow? Brown for South Asians and yellow for Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans.

PIL - Passion in Life

Finding a career path isn't an easy task. Especially in our society students do what they are told to do. Obedience is okay, but passion is when you actually come to know what you want to do. This community tries to do something constructive in this regard. That something could be answering your questions regarding fields of study, scholarship, and yes, even philosophical questions.

L2V - Love to Volunteer

Students who volunteer, and people who love to volunteer possess a heart of change. That's the approach of the community. We want people who would love to spend their energies, time, and talent on a very small scale.

List of volunteering students and the tasks they acheived

1) Typed questions of Short Stories 1-15.

Note: This post will be continuously updated.

I wish when students become responsible for what they sign up for and take up volunteering as a task they are truly committed to complete.

A post after almost 7 months.

I happened to apply in F---. It was an interesting experience. It so happened that they pulled the plug just at the last minute. It was pretty devastating. I'm still teaching high school students in C------- which is interesting experience. The salary is not good at all. Quite demoralizing if you ask me, especially after having an MPhil degree. But I'm glad that I'm able to help students in many ways: career counselling, a little bit of perspective about life, and teaching a new word every now and then.

There are many brilliant students like Ali, Abdullah, Jawad, Shahzaib, Hammad, and Moaz, who I would like to see do best in their lives. The high school life period of my life was in short 'hell'. I just hope my students can come out of that time saying that it was a little less than hell. It was hell because there was so much to do and you knew so little about how to do things, and how to function about in life.

The life of a teacher is extremely hectic. The more I see my fellow colleagues working, I realize that every day is a torture of workload. There is always some new duty that was not given to us the previous year keeps adding up as if it should our duty as well. It is interesting to see how things work out.

Being a teacher it is always rewarding to see when a student makes an effort. I'm going to rest now or sleep now. And instead of Facebook I'd rather prefer this blog.
